To mark World Quantum Day 2026, we spoke to Scott Dufferwiel, CEO and co-founder of quantum computing company Aegiq, about the company's scale-up journey to date.

Founded and based in Sheffield, Aegiq is a full-stack photonic quantum company powering next-generation computing for aerospace, cybersecurity, defence, energy, pharma and AI.

The company has developed a first generation quantum computer that is currently deployed at the UK National Quantum Computing Centre in Harwell, Oxfordshire.

In the interview, Scott explains how the company is taking advantage of fully developed semiconductor manufacturing capability in the UK to develop and scale it's technology, whilst also growing the team with a pipeline of highly-skilled and experience talent emanating from Sheffield and the surrounding area.

Scott also talks more broadly about the quantum technologies and the role they will play in solving some of society's more pressing and intractable problems.
